Course
description
This is the second semester of first-year
college French. The objective is
to continue development of proficiency in all four language skills: listening
comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. You will also learn about the cultures of France and other
French-speaking countries.
The entire class will meet to do work based
on material in the textbook. In
addition, you will be assigned certain exercices in the lab book to supplement
your classroom activities and some internet based grammar exercises.
The C-hour
The C-hour is an integral part of the 4
credit course; The material introduced in the C-hour will appear on course
examinations and represent 15 % of the course grade.
You must register for one of the 102C
sections listed in the Schedule of classes. However, regardless of which section you selected, you
will enroll for the C hour online
with your regular teacher. This
will be done with your teacher the first week of classes.
The lab
You will also be assigned audio and video exercices from the workbook for each chapter lesson.
You will be graded on a Pass/Fail basis for
these assignments. This will represent 10% of your grade.
IMPORTANT
GFR Placement
GFR students cannot place themselves into
one course lower than the placement chart without the permission of the
department. No GFR credit can be given to a student who has attained level 3 or
higher in High School. If you feel that your background is not solid enough,
you should register for French 103 which is a review and has been designed for
this purpose. Otherwise, with a level 3 or higher in High School, you should
register for Fren 201.
GER Placement
GER students who have attained levels 2 or 3 in High School
and have placed themselves one
course lower than the appropriate placement level will nevertheless have to
complete the appropriate requirement for that placement level in order to
receive GER credit. Students enrolled in 102 who have attained level 3 in H.S,
must also take 201.
Students who have attained level 4 or above
in H.S have the option of taking all language courses, all culture courses, or
a combination of these.
Please, be aware that either French 102 or
French 103 (not both) may be used toward the UMBC language/culture requirement.
