                           THE PROJECT

This summer, SHAKESPEARE ON WHEELS marks its seventh season with
The Tempest. Based on a project created by Theatre
Department Chairman William T. Brown in Africa in 1964, this
innovative summer program mounts a portable Elizabethan stage
atop a 40-foot flatbed truck. In the spirit of Europe's pageant
wagons, the theatre and its players travel throughout Maryland and
neighboring states, bringing to life the immortal words of
Shakespeare before people of every age and background.
SHAKESPEARE ON WHEELS has received national and state awords,
and its production of As You Like It received a special
invitation to perform at the 1990 Kennedy Center Open House Arts
Festival.

                               THE SCHOOL
From its contemporary campus setting just minutes from Baltimore
and convenient to Washington, D.C. and Annapolis, UMBC maintains the
traditions and values of a liberal arts institution while advancing
knowledge across a variety of disciplines. Its 28 undergraduate degree
programs range from the sciences and engineering to the arts and
humanities. Its graduate school, conducted with the University of
Maryland at Baltimore, offers 87 degree programs.

The Theatre Department at UMBC offers majors in acting, technical
theatre, and educational theatre. Productions are presented during the
regular academic year as well as the summer months via SHAKESPEARE ON
WHEELS. Over the past 17 years, nine UMBC productions have been
selected for presentation in the regional competition of the
American College Theater Festival. The most recent was Oscar Wilde's
Salome, directed by Sam McCready. Four of these have advanced
to the prestigious National Festival at the John F. Kennedy Center for
the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. Recent UMBC productions include
Jean-Paul Sartre's No Exit, Samuel Beckett's Not I, Ohio
Impromptu, and Rockaby, and a new version of Euripides'
Medea. UMBC is also the home of The Maryland Stage Company, a
professional company directed by Xerxes Mehta.

                              SYNOPSIS
Banished as the rightful ruler of his kingdom, Prospero establishes
dominion over an enchanted land by drawing on his great learning and
magical skills. Serving Prospero and his daughter Miranda are the
wondrous spirit Ariel and the monstrous creature Caliban. By raising
a tempest, Prospero wrecks the ship carrying his old enemies. Though
tempted to avenge the wrongs he has suffered, Prospero instead uses
his arts to heal the old wounds of strife and dissention. Ultimately,
he effects a match between his daughter Miranda and Ferdinand, son of
his former enemy.
