wo rival families, the Capulets
and the Montagues, are fighting
with each other; the Prince
orders them to stop at the risk of
their lives. Lady Montague is concerned
about the withdrawn behavior of her teenage
son, Romeo, but to his friend, Benvolio, he
confesses he is infatuated with a lady of the
court, Rosaline. With another friend,
Mercutio, a relative of the Prince, they hear
about a party being given by Lord Capulet
and they de- cide to "gate-crash" it. At the
party Romeo and Juliet, the daughter of Lord
and Lady Capulet, fall deeply in love, and
with the help of Juliet's conniving Nurse and
a friendly monk, Friar Laurence, they decide
to marry without seeking their parents'
permission. Despite the Prince's warning the
young men continue their feuding. In one of
the brawls Mercutio is killed by Tybalt, Lord
Capulet's nephew, and in revenge Romeo
kills Tybalt and is banished by the angry
Prince. At the risk of his life Romeo spends
the wedding night with Juliet and then goes
into hiding in Mantua. Meanwhile, Juliet's
parents arrange for her to marry a young
nobleman, Paris, and in her distress she
agrees to take a drug prescribed by Friar
Laurence; she will appear to be dead, only to
revive later in her tomb, where the Friar
arranges that Romeo will return to her. This
plan goes wrong, however, when Romeo fails
to get a message from the Friar. Instead he
hears from his Page that Juliet is dead. He
hurries to her tomb, encounters and kills his
rival, Paris, then kills himself with poison he
has recently bought from an apothecary.
Juliet awakens at the time promised by the
Friar and when she sees Romeo dead she kills
herself. The Friar confesses to the parents
his part in the plan, and both families, in
their distress, agree to settle their differences
and live at peace.
