FUNDING
SHAKESPEARE ON WHEELS is funded in part by grants from the
Maryland State Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Additional funding is provided by the UMBC Office of Summer and
Winter Programs and the UMBC Office of the Dean of Arts and Sciences,
the UMBC Theatre Department, the FRIENDS OF SHAKESPEARE ON
WHEELS, and our many generous host sponsors and patrons through-
out the region. All proceeds from the sale of T-shirts and buttons benefit
the SHAKESPEARE ON WHEELS program. Tax-deductible contribu-
tions may be mailed to: SHAKESPEARE ON WHEELS, UMBC Theatre
Department, 5401 Wilkens Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21228-5398.
FRIENDS OF SHAKESPEARE ON WHEELS
Although SHAKESPEARE ON WHEELS receives funding from
university, state, and local sources, the program still relies on the
philanthropy of others to meet its operating needs. Your generous
donations last year made a significant impact on the SHAKESPEARE ON
WHEELS ENDOWMENT FUND and enabled the program to qualify for
state matching funds. But this is just the beginning. Your continued
support of our FRIENDS OF SHAKESPEARE ON WHEELS CAMPAIGN
can ensure that the wheels keep rolling along in the future. Would you
consider making a gift to us? Fot more information, contact the UMBC
Theatre Department at (410)455-2179.
THE PROJECT
This summer, SHAKESPEARE ON WHEELS marks its eighth
season with Othello. Based on a project created by Theatre Department
chairman William T. Brown in Africa in 1963, this innovative summer
program mounts a portable Elizabethan stage atop a 4O-foot flatbed
truck. In the spirit of England's pageant wagons, the theatre and its
players travel throughout Maryland and neighboring states, bringing to
life the immortal works of Shakespeare before people of every age and
background. SHAKESPEARE ON WHEELS has received national and
state awards, and its 1990 production of As You Like It received a
special invitation to perform at the John F. Kennedy Center for the
Performing Arts Open House Arts Festival.
THE SCHOOL
From its contemporary campus setting just minutes from Balti-
more and convenient to Washington, D.C. and Annapolis, the University
of Maryland Baltimore County maintains the traditions and values of a
liberal arts institution while advancing knowledge across a variety of
disciplines. Its 28 undergraduate degree programs range from the
sciences and engineering to the arts and humanities. Its graduate
school, conducted with the University of Maryland at Baltimore,
offers 90 degree programs.
The Theatre Department offers majors in acting, technical
theatre and educational theatre. Productions are presented during the regular
academic year as well as the summer months via Shakespeare on
Wheels. Over the past 17 years, nine UMBC productions have been
selected for presentation in the regional competition of the American
College Theatre Festival. The most recent was Oscar Wilde's Salome,
directed by Sam McCready. Four of these have advanced to the presti-
gious National Festival at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Perform-
ing Arts in Washington, D.C. Recent UMBC productions include Jean-
Paul Sartre's No Exit, and a new version ofMedea by Brendan Kennell)
The Maryland Stage Company, a professional company directed by
Xerxes Mehta, has produced plays by Samuel Beckett and, most re-
cently, Marat/Sade by Peter Weiss.

SYNOPSIS
Iago, passed over for promotion in the Venetian army in favor of
another officer, Cassio, determines, with the help of a foolish noble-
man, Roderigo, to avenge himself on his commander Othello, a Moor.
Othello secretly marries Desdemona, the daughter of Brabantio, a
well-to-do Venetian. Observing Othello's passionate nature, Iago
decides to plant and nurture the seeds ofjealousy in his commander.
To achieve this, he implies that Desdemona is having an affair with
Cassio. Iago intensifies his plans when Desdemona accidentally looses
a precious handkerchief that was a gift from her husband, the Moor.
Othello falls into the trap that Iago sets for him, becoming obsessively
jealous and ready to believe anything he is told about his wife's
supposed infidelity. Othello's passions are raised to such a fever pitch
that he smothers Desdemona. Iago's plans begin to falter when his
wife, Emilia, realizes the truth of his deceptions. In a vain effort to
save himself, Iago stabs Emilia to death. Othello, realizing that
Desdemona was innocent, attempts to kill Iago but fails. Othello then
turns his knife on himself and dies with Desdemona. Iago, finally, is
left to face the consequences of his actions.
