THE PROJECT
With The Merry Wives of Windsor, SHAKESPEARE ON WHEELS marks its
ninth summer season. The SHAKESPEARE OM WHEELS concept was
developed by UMBC Theatre Department Chairman William T. Brown,
while on a special assignment in Nigeria, West Africa in 1963. A
40-foot flatbed truck becomes an innovative multi-levelstage. In the
spirit of england's pageant wagons, the theatre and its players travel
throughout Maryland and neighboring states, bringing the immortal
works of Shakespeare to the people. SHAKESPEARE ON WHEELS has
received national and state awards. and its 1990 production of As
You Like IT was invited to be performed at the John P. Kennedy Center
for the Performing Arts, Washington, DC. SHAKESPEARE ON WHEELS has
received press coverage on CNN, The Voice of America, The
Washington Post, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and other
media in the U.S. and abroad.
THE SCHOOL
From its contemporary campus setting just minutes from Baltimore and
convenient to Washington, DC, and Annapolis, the University of
Maryland Baltimore County maintains the traditions and values of a
liberal arts institution while advancing knowledge across a variety of
disciplines. Its undergraduate degree programs range from the
sciences and engineering to the arts and humanities. Its graduate
school. conducted with the University of Maryland at Baltimore, offers
90 degree programs. The Theatre Department offers majors in acting,
technical theatre, and educational theatre. Productions are presented
during the regular academic year as well as the summer months via
SHAKESPEARE ON WHEELS. Over the past 18 years. ten UMBC
productions have been selected for presentation in the regional
competition of the American College Theatre Festival. The most recent
was Bertolt Brecht's adaptation of The Tutor, directed by Sam
McCready. Four have advanced to the prestigious National Festival at
the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. This year, state
budget cuts posed a serious threat to the program's existence.
Audience response and appreciation helped to spare SHAKESPEARE ON
WHEELS and the Theatre Department, ensuring that we would continue
to bring Maryland outstanding theatre. We thank you for your active
interest and support.
Coming next summer:
SHAKESPEARE ON WHEELS'
10th Anniversary Production of
HAMLET
SYNOPSIS
Justice Shallow and his cousin Slender complain to Evans, a Welsh
preacher, of their injuries at the hands of Sir John Falstaff. Evans
advises them to forget their grievances, and to seek a marriage
between the simple-minded Slender and the wealthy Anne Page.
Unrepentant of the injuries he has inflicted. and feeling the emptiness
of his purse. Falstaff decides to seduce Mistress Ford and Mistress Page
to gain access to their husbands' considerable purses. Outraged when
they receive identical love letters from Falstaff, the faithful wives turn
their indignation to constructive and entertaining uses to teach the 'fat
knight' a lesson. Their husbands, Ford and Page. are warned of Falstaff's
lustful intentions. Jealous and determined to "expose" his wife, Ford
disguises himself to enlist the help of ralstaff. Thus, the tricks and
traps of the 'Merry Wives' not only lead Falstaff on a merry chase, but
Ford as well. Meanwhile, Slender's plans to marry are frustrated by the
amorous intentions of the pompous French physician, Dr. Caius, and the
handsome, but poor, Master Fenton, both of whom also want to mary Anne
Page. The complicated twists and turns of the plot are resolved in the
woods near Windsor, in a fantastic finale that includes a stag, fairies,
and mistaken identities.
