THE PROJECT This summer, SHAKESPEARE ON WHEELS marks its sixth season with As You like It. Based on a project created by Theatre Department Chairman William T. Brown in Africa during 1964, this innovative summer program mounts a portable Elizabethan-style stage on top of a 40-foot flatbed trailer. In the spirit of Europe's pageant wagons, the theatre and its players travel throughout Maryland and neighboring states, bringing the plays of Shakespeare to people of every age and background.
THE SCHOOL From its contemporary campus just minutes from Baltimore and convenient to Washington, D.C. and Annapolis, UMBC maintains the traditions and values of a liberal arts institution while advancing knowledge across a variety of disciplines. Its 28 undergraduate degree programs range from the sciences and engineering to the arts and humanities. Its graduate school, conducted with the University of Maryland at Baltimore, offers 87 degree programs. The Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery ranks among the nation's leeding university libraries in automation-enhanced information systems. The Theatre Department of UMBC offers majors in acting, technical theatre, and educational theatre. Productions are presented during the regular academic year (September-May), os well as during the summer months via SHAKESPEARE ON WHEELS. Over the post 16 years, nine UMBC productions have been selected for presentation in the regional competition of the American College Theatre Festival. The most recent entry was Oscar Wilde's Salome, directed by Sam McCready. Four of these have advanced to the prestigious National Festival at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, in Washington, D.C. Recent UMBC productions include William Congreve's The Way of the World, Dario Fo's Accidental Death of An Anarchist, and Friedrich Duerrenmatt's The Visit. UMBC is also the home for The Maryland Stage Company, a semi-professional company directed by Associate Professor Xerxes Mehta. UMRC THEATRE FACULTY Associate Professors: William T. SYNOPSIS Set in the majestic forest of Arden, As You Like It introduces the wise and lovely Rosalind, one of Shakespeare's most independent heroines. She adores the youth Orlando and decides to teach him all she knows of love while dressed as a man. The nimble-minded clown Touchstone, the melancholy philosopher Jacques, and the saucy shepherdess Phebe also live in the forest and as they, too, fall under Rosalind's spell, a world as rich and varied as love itself flowers on the stage. As You Like It begins with scenes from two households, Orlando's and Rosalind's. The setting then changes to the Forest of Arden.
