Possible Essay Questions (50 Points)
One of the
following questions will appear on the exam
1) Spain, England, and France developed
different models of interaction with Native Americans during the first
centuries after the arrival of Columbus.
What were these models? How and
why did they differ from one another?
Consider these models from the perspective of Native Americans and rank
them from best to worst. Explain your
ranking. Consider the models from
the perspective of Europeans and rank them from best to worst. Explain your ranking.
2) You have applied to be a contestant on
PBS’s new reality based television program Colonial House, where, for a
period of six months, people live the lives of ordinary people from the year
1675. During those months, you will
face all the problems of the historical figure whose role you play. The possible roles are: Pueblo
Indian, Slave in Virginia,
Indentured Servant in Virginia, Wife, Puritan held captive among the
Wampanoag. Every character is a
mainstream example (i.e. no liberated wives with progressive husbands). Rank
your choices according to the roles you think you would find the easiest to
play for six months given what you know about the roles and their
circumstances of those roles in 1675 [THE YEAR MATTERS] (1 being easiest, 5 hardest). Your own
race and gender make no difference in the selection; PBS will have some people
playing against type (i.e. white folks playing slaves). Make your selection based solely on which
roles you think would be easiest or hardest to maintain. You must EXPLAIN your ranking by using
material from lectures and readings to justify your choices. Remember to bear in mind that the year is
1675—again, the year DOES matter for most roles.
