Finding Academic Job Announcements

What follows are some suggestions for finding academic job
announcements. Some of the suggestions focus on Women's Studies
positions, while others are concerned primarily with positions
regardless of field in institutions that prize teaching above
research. For additional WMST-L files now available on the Web,
see the WMST-L File Collection.

Subject: Where are Job Postings in Women's Studies?
Hi, folks. In the past week or so, I've received several private
messages asking me where one could find job postings in Women's
Studies. I've just answered such a message privately, but I thought I
should also send my suggestions to WMST-L. Some but not all repeat
suggestions that were made recently in a WMST-L thread about jobs that
stressed teaching. [Editor's note: that thread is included below in
this file.]

Here are the suggestions I just sent privately:

1) The Women's Studies Database at the U. of Maryland, College Park,
has a section on Employment that includes a number of jobs in Women's
Studies: http://www.mith2.umd.edu/WomensStudies/Employment/

2) The National Women's Studies Association's web site posts some job
openings: http://www.nwsa.org/announce.htm

3) The Chronicle of Higher Education includes a number of academic
job listings in Women's Studies. You can search for free, though if
you're a subscriber, you're also entitled to use their "Advanced
Search" feature (enabling you to search for jobs in specific regions,
in multiple fields, using keywords, etc.). The regular search can be
found at http://chronicle.com/jobs/ . I typed in "women's studies"
(without the quotation marks) and got a number of returns. All are
current.

4) The WMST-L Web Interface permits WMST-L subscribers who have set a
password with the web interface to search the logfiles for job
announcements (or any other topic that has appeared on WMST-L). I
just tried to search for all messages including the word "job" or
"position" from June 2003 to today (Oct. 13, 2003). I got links to
65 messages. Not all were relevant--the word "job" or "position" can
appear in contexts other than employment--but the overwhelming
majority WERE relevant. The interface can be found at
http://www.listserv.umd.edu/archives/wmst-l.html . Illustrated
information about the interface can be found at
http://www.umbc.edu/wmst/interface.html .

There may well be other good sources of current information; the
above are the ones that came to mind most quickly. A google search
on "jobs" and "women's studies" might also produce useful results.
And while not a listing of jobs, Katherine Side's recently (2003)
updated "Academic Job Searches in Women's Studies: A Selected
Bibliography" may also be useful. You can find this in the WMST-L
File Collection at http://www.umbc.edu/wmst/side.html .

I think I'll add this message to WMST-L's File Collection. If
there are good sources that I've overlooked, I suspect that many
people on WMST-L would appreciate your sending the suggestions to the
list. I'll then include them as well in the file I'll add to the
File Collection.

Thank you Joan for this information. Since I am also looking for a WS job I
thought that I would pass on these additional links to others who may need
them. Some may be duplicates and I am still compiling more each day but this
is a good start.

[EDITOR'S NOTE: HERE BEGINS THE JOB HUNTING THREAD REFERRED TO ABOVE]

Date: Fri, 3 Oct 2003 14:27:56 -0400
From: Blaise Parker <blaze AT UGA.EDU>
Subject: how to search for jobs?
Hi all,

I am looking for some advice on academic job hunting. I'm
preparing to graduate in May with my PhD in developmental
psychology and graduate certificates in women's studies and
qualitative methodology. I have found through my years here
that it is really teaching that is my love, and I would like
to find a college/university teaching job in women's
studies, GLBT studies, psychology, or some combination
thereof. The problem I am having is that it seems like most
of the job ads I come across are research oriented. I am
more interested in working for a small liberal arts school
with a focus on teaching (or community college, or
whatever), and I just don't know where to look to find these
jobs. I've used google, checked out the Chronicle's job
search site, read the ads in the APA Monitor, looked at
NWSA's web site, and have only found a few leads that look
promising. My ideal goal would be to end up on the West
Coast, because that's where my family is, although I know I
can't necessarily be picky about that. Anyhow, I guess what
I am wondering is, do small, liberal arts or teaching
focused schools advertise for jobs somewhere else? Or am I
just not finding them because they aren't there? What are
some things I might look for in ads to let me know if the
jobs are more teaching oriented?

Apologies for cross posting.

Thank you,
Blaise

There is an online source, Higher Education Jobs, which lists community
college jobs separately from others:

www.highedjobs.com

You might also look at the American Sociological Association web site,
www.asanet.org - they have an employment bulletin that comes out every
month. I just read through all the job ads in the October issue, and
remember seeing a couple of jobs that emphasized teaching and looked for a
'generalist', someone with a background in social sciences and not
necessarily just in sociology. The Employment Bulletin is at
www.asanet.org/pubs/eb/

I know that community colleges tend to advertise their positions on the
human resources sections of the particular school's website. You could try
finding out the names of schools where you want to work and then going to
their websites to see if jobs are available. Also, when I was on the job
market (two years ago) I found that community colleges mostly advertised for
positions in January rather than the Fall like research institutions.

Good luck!

Hi all,

Thanks for the responses regarding my query about finding
community college and liberal arts jobs. I got a bunch of
good tips, and I wanted to post the compiled information for
those who asked me what I found. I appreciate all the help!
