University of Maryland Baltimore County Shady Grove Education Center
IFSM 303 Human Factors in Computer Systems Design Spring Semester 2003
Mondays, 1:00 - 3:30p.m., Shady Grove Campus, Room
2022
Course Description This course involves the study of the Systems Development
Life Cycle as it pertains to the design of the user interface. Emphasis
is placed on the importance of research and systems theory to all facets
of analysis and design. Jenny Preece's text, Interaction
Design: Beyond Human-Computer Interaction, 2002, is used to study the
theories and principles that apply to human-computer interaction.
As a result of this course, through
readings and assignments, students will be able to:
Define 'interface design,' 'interaction design' and 'human-computer interaction'
Describe human factors theories, models and guidelines
Describe human information processing in both an individual and group context
Describe each facet of the interaction design life cycle
Analyze and develop the conceptual design model and then prototype a web
interface
Describe the relationships between design, prototyping and evaluation
Study and discuss human factors usability studies
Locate and then describe key aspects of various interfaces
Participate in computer supported collaborative communication
