ENGL631 E-Necessities

1) If you don't already have an email account through UMBC, then get one immediately. You'll need this for communicating with class, putting up your own website, accessing myUMBC, and accessing information through UMBC library, including downloading full-text articles. Very handy for research.

Visit Email Accounts at the Office of Information Technology's (OIT) website.

2) Subscribe to class email list.

If you were a participant in English 648, I will simply transfer your email address to the new class email list. If you're a new participant, please send me your name and email address, and I'll subscribe you. Information on using email lists can be found at Listproc @ UMBC. UMBC offers a web-based user interface so that you can manage your UMBC email lists. Just go to lpUMBC. Our class email list address is engl631@listproc.umbc.edu.
NETIQUETTE - for general rules of netiquette on email lists, refer to The Core Rules of Netiquette by Virginia Shea. In addition, be aware that my rules for class email lists include the following: 1) postings must be restricted to class business and assignments (no spam, chain letters, jokes, advertisements); and 2) all postings are part of the class process and means of communication; never forward a posting by a class member unless you have that person's permission to do so.

3) Ensure that you have a userid and password for Tapped In MUVE (multi-user virtual environment).

We'll use Tapped In for online meetings. I'll hold office hours and conferences and we may have one or two online classes here. You'll be able to work collaboratively with others in class as well as with a larger community of K-12 professionals.
NETIQUETTE - be sure to read Tapped In's guidelines for observing netiquette: What is Tapped In Etiquette?

4) Subscribe to NCTE-talk.

The National Council of Teachers of English offers a number of email lists at Teacher Talk. Please subscribe to NCTE-talk and choose one other list to subscribe to. At the end of class, you're welcome to unsubscribe from these lists; however, be prepared to find them indispensable. These lists can be invaluable resources.
