6 Feb.- CHANGE IN ASSIGNMENT & CLASS LOCATION: please read "Model Standards for Beginning Teacher Licensing and Development: A Resource for State Dialogue", developed by the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium. Please pay particular attention to the 10 draft standards or principles. POST: questions to class list by Sunday, 3 Feb., 11.30pm. Questions can be anything at all. WRITING: choose one principle and write about your experiences of and/or reactions to the knowledge, dispositions, and performances sections of the principle (2-3 pages, double spaced). CLASS DISCUSSION: If the definition of an instructional system is "an arrangement of resources and procedures to promote learning," then do you see the NTASC document as an instructional system? If so, in what ways? If not, why not? LOCATION: We'll meet in the Library, room 259 (on second floor, in left-hand back corner). Please go directly to this room.

27 Feb. - MEET: from an Internet connection, where you can logon to the Web (your home, for instance), on TappedIn MUVE, my office. We will discuss the semester-long project proposals. POST: - by Monday, noon, a proposal of your semester-long project. Please print out everyone's proposal, read it, and be ready to discuss during class. READ: - "Draft Maryland Teacher Technology Standards" - we will also discuss these while we're on TappedIn.
6 March - MEET: We'll start out in ACIV 121 to discuss the "Draft Maryland Teacher Technology Standards," which we were unable to discuss during class on 27 Feb. POST: Just post your reactions to the list about having class on Tapped In MUVE. ASSIGNMENT: - based on the feedback you got on your project proposal, re-direct your research and/or continue with research. If you're building a class website on TeacherWeb.com, research other teachers' websites using this resource. If you're incorporating a virtual tour, check out some other virtual tours. Please turn in a progress report of your research AND the revised hard copy draft of your project proposal. READ: Familiarize yourself with Tate and Alexander's "Web Resource Evaluation Techniques" - you'll find a link on their Evaluating Web Resources main page, or you can read Chapter 2 in their book Web Wisdom: How to Evaluate and Create Information Quality on the Web. Please also read Chapter 4 of the book; if you don't have the book, read the Evaluation Checklist for Informational Web Pages on the website. LAB: After our discussion of the Maryland Teacher Technology Standards, we'll go to our lab in FA002 and work on using resources such as TeacherWeb.com and web editing tools.
13 March - MEET: ACIV 121 READ: We'll begin a discussion of educational software as instructional system. Please read the following pages on evaluating educational software: Recommendations from NCS Learn on Evaluating Learning Software and How to Evaluate Educational Software and Websites (the second reading can be printed out as an Adobe Acrobat .pdf file - you'll find a link to the pdf file at the top of the website).
After you read about evaluation criteria, please visit the following two software evaluation databases: Evalutech and NetTech. Choose a piece of software you currently use in the classroom or plan to use and compare the evaluations on each site. Write up your findings (how useful and accurate is each database?) and bring them to class.

17 April - MEET: ACIV 121 ASSIGNMENT: 1) Read "Textbook Evaluation and Adoption" (article sent to class email list). Be prepared to discuss article in class and pay careful attention to evaluation criteria presented at end of article. 2) Find out how textbooks are chosen for your class/grade-level/school. 3) Bring in a textbook (or 2) from your workplace. We will work in groups to evaluate these textbooks and present our findings to the class. 4) Report to the class on the progress of your semester-long project. What have you accomplished? What do you have yet to do? If you have documents you wish to show the class, please feel free to bring copies or show us online materials when we're in lab. We also need to determine order of presentations - who presents on 1 May and who presents on 8 May? 5) We'll look at and evaluate lesson plan collections on the web during lab time.
24 April - MEET: Computer Lab, FA002 ASSIGNMENT: YOUR CHOICE - choose to do either the E-portfolios assignment or the Adopt-a-Website assignment. Revise the Adopt-a-Website assignment to take only one week instead of several. This page will include links to adopted websites and evaluations presented by the 791c class.
