Description & Goals

This section of Instructional Systems Development II focuses on K-12 instructional systems, although some of the systems we will analyze also apply to other audiences. Some of the topics we will cover include a brief history of instructional systems design, course web authoring products, educational software, educational MOOs (online learning environments), and issues of access to information technology. This course will also focus on instructional systems as they apply to K-12 teacher development.

More specifically, this course aims to

• introduce participants to a range of instructional systems geared towards both students and teachers in the K-12 area
• provide participants with the tools to analyze the pedagogical efficacy of such systems
• facilitate participants' ability to produce and articulate their own instructional development theories and practices

Assignments & Grading Policies - or How We Study, What We Produce, and How We Evaluate

We will decide as a group what kinds of intellectual product would be most beneficial. Some of my ideas include the following:

• weekly critical responses to the reading
• individual presentation of some class material
• weekly participation in broader online communities (discussion lists and MOOs) and written reflection on that participation
• development of an e-portfolio, which would include work in this course

These ideas are open for discussion. We will decide collectively how to evaluate intellectual production.
