Fri 16 Jan discussion of group work, course goals, research interests; go see Amistad, Steven Spielberg's film about a slave ship mutiny and the 19th-century politics of abolition. You may use this film as one cultural event, if you wish. We will be discussing the film as a way of looking at history and the media, and as an addition to our reading of Douglass's Narrative.
