The Site Layers is solid waste collected in collaboration with Jill Howitt and Hull College art students. The solid waste is displayed on 6 to 8 stratified layers of mesh suspended between four brooms. The students were split up into 6 to 10 two-person teams and directed to sweep a particular street in Hull. Each group was presented with a broom, a pair of gloves, a dust pan, a garbage bag and a 4 X 5 (7.62 cm X 12.17 cm) index card |

with the address of a site to clean. Each Big Sweep team was photographed and videotaped at the activity site. During the collection period we will frequently process the different retrieval of garbage by notating, sorting, and digitally documenting. This information will be collected in a 7 1/2" X 12" rubbish journal, and I will encourage each group to write a one to two page response to the project that will also be included with the documentation and posted later on the web site: http://research.umbc.edu/~sbradley The collected debris represents a snapshot of a particular sites variety of solid waste. Through tagging, notating, and arrangement of the trash, I will simulate the pattern of debris type and frequency found at these sites. Each layer will represent a place. |
