UMBC gl setup for FTP Voyager

Here's what it looks like when you are not connected to any FTP servers. Notice that your home computer's files and directories (folders) are shown on the lower part of the program

FTP Voyager - Not Connected

1. Set up FTP Voyager to connect to UMBC's gl system.

You should see the "FTP Site Profile Manager" dialog box in front of the FTP Voyager application. . .
(or click the "New Session" button on the tool bar).
Click the "New Site" button at the bottom left of the dialog box...

Then fill in the dialog box as shown (the description is optional).
Another option is to fill in a default starting directory (folder) on the remote machine (in the "Default Directory" box).
Example: program_projects/cs201/project1
Note: Leaving this box empty will connect you to your "home" directory by default.
In the spaces for "User ID" and "Password", fill in your own gl account user name and password. If you want these to be entered automatically after you get it set up, make sure the "Save Password" checkbox is checked.
Also, make sure the "Anonymous Login" checkbox is not checked.

As an option, if you would rather not be bombarded with a view of the many "dot" files (those files beginning with a period) that are stored in some of your gl directories, you can choose not to have them displayed.
Click the "Advanced" button on the FTP Site Profile Manager dialog box.
This will bring up the "Advanced Settings" dialog box.
On the "File" tab, put a check in the "Hide files and folders that start with a period" checkbox as shown.

Click "OK" on the "Advanced Settings" dialog box

Now that you have the site profile filled in, click "Connect"
.

2. You're connected!

You should see the top part of the program come to life with a view of your UMBC gl directory (folder) tree and any files you have in the directory you chose as the default connection directory.

You can click on any of the directories (folders) shown to enter them.
You can add a new folder by clicking on the folder where you would like to create a new folder and then click the "New Folder" button
Note: The new directory will be created inside the directory you highlighted.

In order to transfer files (either from your computer to gl, or vice versa) you must click on the file(s) you wish to transfer (this will highlight them).
Note: You can highlight multiple files by holding down the "Shift" or "Ctrl" key while clicking.
Make sure the computer to which you are sending the file(s) (home or gl) is displaying the directory (folder) to which you want the file(s) sent.
Then just click the "Upload Selected" button to transfer files from your computer to UMBC gl.
Or, click the "Download Selected" button to transfer files from UMBC gl to your computer.

3. Options Setup

Now you need to set up FTP Voyager to transfer your files in the proper format.
Click on the "View" then "Options" from the menu at the top of FTP Voyager.
This will bring up the "FTP Voyager Options" dialog box.
Click on the "Auto ASCII" tab and fill it in as shown by typing the extensions into the small box on the right and then clicking the "Add" button.
Note: Only files with the extension shown in this tab will automatically be sent in ASCII format.
You can add or delete extensions from this list if it meets your needs to do so.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: In order for this to work you must also set FTP Voyager to the "Automatic ASCII Transfer Mode".
To do this, just click on the "Automatic ASCII Transfer Mode" button on the main FTP Voyager toolbar.

This next tab is optional. If you happen to write your C/C++ program code using Microsoft Visual C++ or Borland Turbo C++ you've noticed that these programs like to save the ".c" or ".C" files with the extension ".cpp". Well this is unacceptable in the UMBC gl system. But not to worry, you can set up FTP Voyager to automatically change the extensions for you when it transfers the files.
Click on the "Auto Rename" tab and fill it in as shown by clicking the "Add" buttons and filling in the "Auto Rename" dialog box.
Do the same thing with ".h" and ".H" in the "Upload Rename Extensions" section. It is not necessary to reverse this in the "Download Rename Extensions" section since Windows is not case sensitive.
Note: The set up as shown is for C++ files. If you're programming in ANSI C you should enter ".cpp" in the "Rename files ending with:" text box and ".c" (lower case "c") in the "With this extension:" text box.
And do not change the case of the ".h" files. They must remain lower case on the gl system.

Now click "OK"
That's it! You're done!
