Course Objectives:
This special topics class will address the history and culture of the Internet and explore the World Wide Web as an artists' domain for self-publication. The class will examine narrative structures through experiments in linear, passive and hypertextual navigation. Special emphasis will be placed upon intelligent interface design, interactivity, and ease of content delivery via modem.

Course Methodology:
Students will be introduced to a range of HTML and multimedia content authoring tools in a series of weekly workshops. The faculty will also ground students with a rigorous foundation in contemporary theory examining the cultural impact and history of the Internet. Art389C is structured as an advanced computer art course, with considerable responsibility and autonomy required of each student. Handouts, critiques, and demonstrations will be balanced by in class work sessions. The in-class work sessions should be used productively, especially given the difficulty of accessing the lab throughout the week. The class is structured to encourage collaboration with your peers and the community at large. An Art389C Listserve will be created to establish a forum for ideas, responses to readings, and calls for help in solving technical problems. At least five topical WWW sites will be gathered by each student during an early demonstration session, and then subsequently published as an on-line resource for the entire class.

The four projects at the core of Art 389 C will provide a conceptual framework for student projects. The projects are: a personal on-line portfolio and CV; "Hype"; "Fear"; and "Community".

Programs surveyed in this class will include: BBedit; Director/Shockwave, Fetch; GifBuilder; Internet Explorer; JavaScript; Netscape Navigator; PageMill 2; Pico; Photoshop; Premiere; SoundApp; SoundEdit16; and Telnet.

Attendance:
Please note that three or more unexcused absences will result in failure of Art389C. The faculty will call attendance at the start of every class. Please do not arrive late or depart early from class meetings, there simply is too much material to cover in each class and it proves to be disruptive and disrespectful to all of us. Two unexcused late arrivals or early departures will be marked as the equivalent of one absence. Absence from a class is not an excuse for skipping a tutorial, reading assignment, or project. You are fully responsible for completing work.

Grading:
Work must be completed on time and in full satisfaction of the concept and design parameters of each project goal. Late work (assignments handed in after the start of in-class critique sessions) will be automatically downgraded by one letter grade. An Incomplete can only be assigned to students with a passing record unable to complete work due to some unforseeable serious illness or personal tragedy. Non-allowable excuses include forseeable job assignments or work from other courses. Students must assume responsibility for preparing all necessary incomplete status paperwork for faculty signature and for submission to the department.
