UMBC Windows NT Workstation 4.0 PPP Dialup Setup

** Even though UMBC modem administrator cut my dialup connection off once since I used over 100 PPP link hours in that month, I still wrote this dialup instruction for NT lovers.

You need to check if you have your modem installed. In the Control Panel, double click Modems icon. If you don't have a modem listed, you need to click Add button to add one. In the new modem installation, you can let Windows NT help you to detect your modem. You need to have your Windows NT workstation CD ready for your modem installation.

After you have your modem installed, you need to go back to Contral Panel. Double click Network icon. In the Network window, click Services tab. Click Add button to add a new service. Select Remote Access Service in the Select Network Service window and click OK button. Windows NT will look for /I386 directory. Either put in the Windows NT workstation CD or define the path to /I386, and then click Continue button.

In the Configure Port Usage window, choose Dial out only. In the Network Configuration window, check TCP/IP only. After these, you will be asked to restart your computer.

After you restart your computer. Double click on My Computer on your desktop. In the My Computer window, double click Dial-Up Networking icon. You can choose to configure the Phonebook manually. In the New Phonebook Entry, click Basic tab, which is default. Give a name meaningful to yourself in Entry name box. Make sure you use 410 7191094 as your phone number. Click Server tab. The Dial-up server type should be PPP: Windows NT, Windows 95 Plus, Internet. Make sure only check TCP/IP as your network protocol. Leave Enable software compression and Enable PPP LCP extensions checked. Download this UMBCPPP.SCP and copy it to your \winnt\system32\ras directory. Click Script tab, choose Run this script: and choose the script you just downloaded in the drop-down box. Leave all other settings as default.

Wow! You are done! You'd better make a shortcut of Dial-Up Networking icon on your desktop. You are ready to surf now!
