Practice Definitions

Audience and Purpose

The following definition was written for beginning golfers or professional golf viewers to allow them to understand a little part of golfer's lingo.

Introduction and Cause

It is common in the game of golf to witness or produce a poorly hit shot. To take the anger or stress out of an otherwise relaxing sport, golfers have come up with a rather amusing name for bad, ground ridden shots, "worm burner." This term can be used freely among friends, but it should be known that not all golfers have a sense of humor.

Operating Principle

In the amateur world of golf (sometimes professional) there are many situations when the term "worm burner" can be used. The phrase "worm burner" can be used by either an observer (partner waiting for you to shoot) describing your shot or the golfer describing his own shot. It should be kept in mind to have a joking voice rather than mean or mad as some people could take offense. A "worm burner" should also only be used to describe a rather hard grounding shot, as a slow 2 inch shot probably wouldn't be considered a "worm burner."

Exemplification

Some examples of the use of this term are as follows:

Introduction

Slang terms compose a large portion of the English language in today's society, and it is important that one who has recently been introduced to the language be familiar with many of them. One such slang term is "dead presidents," any denomination of American paper currency that has a picture of a deceased American president on it.

Principle of Operation

This term is used when trying to convey your present financial status to another. In most instances the term is used to describe the lack of money and not its abundance.

Exemplification

The term "dead presidents," is usually heard in conversations that pertain to money matters. In this instance a person using this term may say, "I'm trying to go to the movies tonight, but I don't have any dead presidents." This sentence is trying to convey to the listener that the speaker would like to go to the movies but doesn't have any money.

Negation

The term "dead presidents," is not really referring to a person who is hiding a dead person who had once been elected president of the United States. It is only used to describe the figure on the front of a piece of American currency, who happens to be a dead president.
