I am associate professor and chair in the History Department at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) in Baltimore, MD.   I received my Ph.D. in Early American history from Duke University.  I teach early American and Atlantic history, women’s and gender history, and the history of Atlantic slavery.  I have received fellowships from NEH, the John Carter Brown Library, and the American Philosophical Society, among others.  My first book examined the interplay of religion and popular politics in revolutionary North Carolina.  My current book is an investigation of the 1763-1764 slave rebellion in Dutch Berbice, now the Republic of Guyana, in northern South America (see pictures above).
