One morning in winter, the Queen awoke.
Her husband, the King Michael, had been out of bed for some time, for the spot he normally occupied next to her was cold and empty when she reached over with an arm to feel if he was there. It couldn't have been very late, for the sun was still pale in the sky outside. As Queen Katherine stretched, she remembered that it was King Michael's birthday today, and that he would be gone hunting. Just as well, she thought, and then decided to get up. |
