First was the big jam - Seastones > Eyes > Wharf Rat, + A&A - via David Gans Second was an almost complete SB version Third is this version. It is 95% based on version #2, but with audience patches in 3 places: (A). To cover some mix problems in Scarlet Begonias (B). To provide the first 15 minutes of Phil & Ned, whcih was missing from version #2 (C). To provide Sunshine Daydream and US Blues, also missing from version #2 A small number of minor flaws in version #2 were also repaired, although some remain. Mostly what you are hearing is UNCHANGED from version #2. The lineage for version #2 follows: Source: SBD Lineage: Reel master > DAT > CDR > EAC > SHN Extraction and .shn encoding by Seth Kaplan (Sdk022769@aol.com) Slight retracking of discs 2 and 3 (CoolEdit/CDWav) and re-shnning by G.S. Hamilton Thanks Seth for this beautiful copy! And version #3 (this version) has: Audience patches : aud > cass master > 1st gen cass > 2nd gen cass > CDR > EAC > patch The master audience recording is apparently lost and the 1st gen is "with a guy who doesn't trade anymore". Mics on stands spaced approx 12 feet apart. The following editing by Hanno in order to compile the new version: The following defects of the SBD tape were fixed (H.B., 5/01): - d1t1 Scarlet Begonias, uneven mix from minute 2 to 3 patched from AUD/2 - d2t1/2 corrected track ID between Roses and Playing, fixed hiccup at the start of Playing - Seastones 0:00 - 15:20 patched from AUD/2 - Sunshine Daydream - end of show patched from AUD/2 The following editing by Alasdair in order to clean up/retrack the new version: - Hanno pointed out that there are between-track flaws in the big jam in version #2. In a wave editor you could see the tiny fade-in (of approximately 1/10th of a second) at the start of Eyes and Wharf Rat. These are noticeable and irritating flaws. Version #1 seems to be a different mix (mostly with regard to the stereo imaging, which is narrower in version #1. Version #2 also sounds a little cleaner, so I have repaired as best I can the fade-in flaws on Eyes and Wharf Rat, with approximately 1/10th second patch from version #1. There was also a tiny glitch 1250 samples into the jam following Eyes (timing from version #2), which was repaired similarly. d1t06 (Jack Straw): click @ 4:24 d1t09 (Tenn Jed) : retracked d1t10 (Big River : retracked d2t02 (PITB): glitch @ 0:01 d2t03 (Phil & Ned): digi-clicks @ 0:48, 0:48, 0:54, 1:20, 1:51 (slight crackle remains), 4:01, 7:20, crackles @ 2:51, 3:14, 4:17, (the thud which remains was also probably part of the analogue crackling here), 6:41 (as 4:17), 15:15, 11:30, 13:52, 15:03, 15:15. These timings run into d2t04, whcih I later tracked separately. d3t01 (Eyes) : Fade-in at very start was repaired with matching section from Gans version. d3t03 (Space) : Glitch at 1250 samples in (on version #2) was repaired with matching section from Gans version. d3t04 (Wharf Rat) : Fade-in at very start was repaired with matching section from Gans version. d3t05 (A&A) clicks @ 0:12 reduced, repeated section @ 4:45 removed, some silence added at start d3t09 (USB) crackles @ 1:24, 5:19, click @ 5:18, 5:18, 5:21, 5:22 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Taking Phil & Ned>Seastones as a whole, Billy comes in at 11:39 and Guitarists from 11:55 (??) Then first Eyes hints come in at 34:35, 39:05. I split the track into 2 ("Phil & Ned" and "Seastones") mostly because I find CD tracks of this length quite unmanageable; sometimes I want to move around the track quicker. I also retracked Eyes>jam>Wharf Rat to include Stronger Than Dirt as a separate track, for the same reason. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Someone somewhere may be interested in which tracks are changed from the 4-CD version, and which are unaltered: version #3 d1t01 is new (Scarlet) version #3 d1t02 is identical to version #2 d1t02 version #3 d1t03 is identical to version #2 d1t03 version #3 d1t04 is identical to version #2 d1t04 version #3 d1t05 is identical to version #2 d1t05 version #3 d1t06 is repaired from version #2 d1t06 version #3 d1t07 is identical to version #2 d1t07 version #3 d1t08 is identical to version #2 d1t08 version #3 d1t09 is retracked from version #2 d1t09 version #3 d1t10 is retracked from version #2 d2t01 (Big River) version #3 d2t01 is retracked from version #3 d201 + d2t02 (Roses) version #3 d2t02 is repaired and retracked from version #3 d2t02 + d2t03 (PITB) version #3 d2t03 is new (Phil & Ned) version #3 d2t04 is new (but mostly based on version #3 d3t01) (Seastones) version #3 d3t01 is repaired from version #3 d3t02 (Eyes) version #3 d3t02 is repaired from version #3 d3t02 (Stronger Than Dirt) version #3 d3t03 is repaired from version #3 d3t03 (Space) version #3 d3t04 is repaired from version #3 d3t04 (Wharf Rat) version #3 d3t05 is repaired from version #3 d4t01 (A&A) version #3 d3t06 is renamed from version #3 d4t02 (Ship) version #3 d3t07 is renamed from version #3 d4t03 (GDTRFB) version #3 d3t08 is new (Sug Mag/SSDD) version #3 d3t09 is new (US Blues) +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Remaining flaws: d1t02 (Mexicali): crackle @ 2:42 d1t03 (BEW): quiet crackle @ 3:52 d1t10 (Big River): crackle @ 3:01 d2t03 (Phil & Ned): crackle @ 5:40 (quiet), 9:08 (this is similar to those removed @ 4:17 & 6:41, and is perhaps from analogue recording or playback circuitry. If I though it was from the PA I would have left it alone). Also 10:18 (very quiet, Left channel), 10:24 & 10:25 (quiet, Right channel), 10:28, 10:31, 11:30 (sounds like a scratched record, but less noise than the original), 12:52 (quiet), 13:52 (also partially reduced from original), 15:03 (Left channel, partly reduced) d2t03 (Phil & Ned): distortion (overload) @ 3:40, 6:13, several instances 7:20-7:50, 9:00-9:45, 11:40-12:18, 15:17 (All noted Phil & Ned flaws are in the audience portion, there are some glitches (eq at 22:01) in the SB portion, but it is in the nature of Seastones that glitches may not in fact be glitches, and I chose to leave the SB portion alone. There are no majorly disturbing glitches in this part anyway LOL). d3t01 (Eyes): click @ 0:18, Jerry's guitar distorts @ 4:08, possible glitch @7:19??, clicks @ 9:15, 9:16, 15:39, possible splice @ 16:25??, click @21:43 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ alimac@netcomuk.co.uk 31st May 2001
