Not Fade Away > 4:40 3. Lovelight Reprise 9:37 4. Chanting, etc. 25:37 Total time: 60:15 Disc 2 1. Jam > 11:09 2. Main Ten Jam > 6:35 3. Jam > 17:44 4. The Other One Jam 12:39 Total time: 48:07 GSH listening notes: The sound for much of this recording is variously flawed. Most of D1t01 (Lovelight) has serious disortion, buzzing around the bass, static etc. The sound improves considerably around 18:01 of d1t01, but vocals are frequently muted or distant. Weir's vocal on NFA is barely discernible, and Pigpen's vocal on D1t03 (Lovelight reprise) is similarly low. D1t04 does sound like on-stage antics between sets. The instrumental portions are better, and disc 2 contains a good deal of interesting and atypical playing. Notes from the info file for the etree version (http://db.etree.org/ shninfo_detail.php?shnid=4511): "This is a very strange show. The start of Lovelight is clipped, with the recording improving from what is a ragged condition at first. The sound system has technical difficulties, with an intermittent buzz during portions of Lovelight from a bad electrical connection. There is some minor static at 9:30 of the first track. The vocals are very low in the mix, and difficulties with the sound system might explain a lack of singing during the second set, though the jams are very inspired. The recording includes a group chant between sets, which may include members of the band, crowd, a woman who sounds like Grace Slick, a child, an imposter-drummer, security etc." Notes from Deadlists: "This is a very strange show. It's very hard to say where one song ends and the next begins. It sounds as though maybe Set 1 ended with Lovelight and this [subsequent] jam with some chanting is what was happening on stage between the sets. There is an unknown guest guitarist on the part listed under Set 2. The last 34 min initially circulated separately with some copies having more of the audience at the end than others. It sounds like it might not be the end of the show. This also circulates as 8/29/68, due to misreading Dick's handwriting on a tape box. Some circulating CDRs have the Other One Jam cut and others are complete. Some CDRs have the tracks split differently also. A ticket for this show is in the Art of Rock and it says "Carousel Ballroom "Soul Scene" Benefit Dance for the Blackman's Free Store, Weds. June 19 7:30pm, Admission ticket, $1.50 advance, $2.00 at door". Listed as performing are Richie Havens and the Grateful Dead." The following are Dave Sorochty's notes that came with the original info file: "This one has been in circulation for a few months. It is a very strange show, lots of chanting and strange stuff. These timings come from a circulating set of CDRs (I don't have it on CDR - the info was forwarded to me), but it is tough to say where one song ends an another begins. I got it on dat, but I've been out of town the last week, so I haven't had a chance to listen to all of it yet. The last half hour or so has been circulating separately for a while longer than the whole thing. Also - that last half hour circulates incorrectly as 8/29/68, due to a misreading of handwriting.
