Key To The Highway 5:19 Total time: 53:58 GSH notes: This material originally came around on the Airplane trading list as a 1967 Matrix show. Subsequent evidence points to it being from 5/21/68 at the Matrix. The notes that came with this disc are given below, and describe the process of arriving at 5/21/68 as the likely date. *** Here are the notes that came with the disk This disc features Jerry, Jorma, Pigpen, Jack Casady and a Bay Area drummer whose identity we can't reveal ... because not even Charlie knows who it is! Kidd Candelario supposedly said it's Mickey Hart. Our Great Benefactor guessed Spencer Dryden. The upshot is, we don't have a clue. We know it was a Tuesday because the disc in question had the title "Tuesday Night Jam" when Charlie unearthed it. Some digital editing has been done by Walker, who tracked the disc and also removed a spot of annoying dead air. The disc, in its original form, consisted only of two huge tracks. Caveat emptor: The disc isn't perfect. It's a 33-year-old performance, for crying out loud ;-) There are obvious tape flips or cuts, as you can tell from the tracklist. On the other hand, as you might suspect from the lineage, the sound is outstanding for its vintage. *** Here are the notes that verify the date This one caused a little confusion. It was recently offered up on the JA list as a Matrix show from 1967 with, "Jerry, Jorma, Jack, Pig, Unknown drummer - Kidd Candelario supposedly said it's Mickey Hart; or maybe it's Spencer Dryden. We know it's Tuesday as the one [disc] has the title 'Tuesday Night Jam.'" Upon a close listen Pigpen is noticeably missing. Then a photo of a poster from the Carousel 5/21/68 turned up (Thanks, Jeff Tamarkin!) advertising a show with Garcia, Kaukonen, Casady, Elvin Bishop, Steve Miller, Mickey Hart and others. Although the drummer sounds more to me like Dryden, this show fits everything else. May 21, 1968 is a Tuesday even. And then someone smarter than I decided to ask Jorma. His response (below) helps to confirm the show is from the Carousel. Jerry and Jorma are only evident on the first three tracks, but that alone is worth the price of admission. Charlie Miller forwarded this message to BUDD from an anonymous source: ----- Original Message ----- We wrote to Jorma about this Matrix 67 show, and he agrees that it is actually carousel ballroom 5/21/68. He also said that Steve Miller was there too. This is the letter: The following is copied from the JA list and might throw further light on matters. > The CDR/tape going around of a jam that is said to be from the Matrix in > '67 is, I'm reasonably sure, really from the Carousel Ballroom on May 21, 1968. > I have a photo of a flyer for that gig (a benefit) which lists Garcia, > Kaukonen, Casady, Elvin Bishop, Steve Miller, Mickey Hart "and others." This is JK's reply to the post about the Matrix...: sounds right... the harp player would have been Will Scarlett... jorma
