HONORS SEMINAR

SYLLABUS

The Honors Section is open to students enrolled in the Honors College. In addition, those students who have an exceptional record of past performance and who have the permission of the instructor may apply to the instructor and to the Honors College.

The Honors Section follows the same outline and course format as the basic course. This applies to the screenings, reading assignments, class attendance, and participation. In addition, honors students will be part of an Honors Seminar with the following requirements:

I. SEMINAR MEETINGS -

The Honors Seminar will have additional one and one half-hour discussion sessions. The Seminar will meet Mondays from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the Media Center conference room.

II. ADDITIONAL READINGS -

Participants of the Honors Seminar are expected to do additional readings. Sculpting in Time by Andrey Tarkovsky is the additional required text. A copy is on reserve in the Library. Students are to read the entire book and to choose any chapter as a topic for a report to the Seminar (a sign-up sheet is attached).

III. ADDITIONAL SCREENINGS -

The topic for this honors seminar will be the films of Andrey Tarkovsky and of Krzysztof Kieslowski. Kieslowski on Kieslowski, as well Krzysztof Kieslowski's Decalogue Series are also being put on reserve but may take some time to arrive. Each student will choose to report on any film by Tarkovsky or Kieslowski. Please sign-up on the attached sheet.

III. EXAMS -

Students in the Honors Seminar will be asked to write essays on selected topics. The format is also take-home, and the due dates are the same as in the regular course. These exams are to be typewritten, double-spaced, with footnotes and bibliographies in proper term-paper format. The exams are to be handed in on time.

IV. GRADING -

The grading for the Honors Seminar will be as follows:

Participation in Seminar and class discussions, including participation on panels.......................................................40%

Report on readings and film report........................................................20%

Take-home mid-term, due March 31........20%

Take-home final, due May 12...................20%
