ETHIOPIAN HISTORICAL SITES

Legend has it that St. George, seeing that the monarch did not build a church for him, one day came to one of the sites to reproach the king. The king, struck by the wrath of the saint, went ahead immediately with the building of the finest church commensurate with the dignity and reverence due to St. George. The church, built in the form of a cross, was hewn out of huge vertical block cut free from the surrounding rock.
