American Sketches

"Washington guitarist William Feasley's new CD, "American Sketches" (Sonora SO22851CD), includes classical works by Hollywood composers Peter Madlem and Albert Harris, his own transcriptions of Gershwin preludes and songs, ragtime music, spirituals and music adapted from Handel and Scarlatti - music of great variety and vitality - played with with polished fluency."

Simplicity

"The little-explored combination of oboe and guitar has managed to find a small but unique repertory for itself. The sharp, dark overtones of this kind of ensemble work best with lyrical modern music, as in Ibert's dramatic Entr'acte, Karl Pilss's lovely neo-classic Sonatine, and a serious, ruminative piece by Michael Moriarty (yes, the actor!). Rearranged harpsichord works by Cimarosa and Couperin also fare well in this setting. Two folk-clad pieces by classical guitarist Coste composed for such a combo bubble forth with wit and charm. D'Amore, the young duo before you, is fine. Vladimir Lande, one-time principal oboist with the Leningrad Philharmonic, and William Feasley, a late student of Segovia, bring control and finesse to the music. Only one other disk of this sort has come my way in 8 years with ARG -- a German duo on Christophorus -- and D'Amore is better. If any duo can persuade composers to add to this narrow yet fascinating field, they can."
