A literature-centered course on the molecular genetics of information transfer in eukaryotes.

The material covered in the course will encompass transcription and transcriptional control (including the effect of chromatin on gene expression), post-transcriptional control (splicing, protein phosphorylation and protein degradation) and translation and translational control. See the syllabus for a more detailed description of the scope and aims of the course. Analysis of primary research literature will include in-class collaborative learning.

About half of the course will consist of student in-class collaborative work and oral reports of the results of that work. The course will also emphasize written expression through a journal of responses to research articles and two short writing assignments. We will use peer-review of written work to provide feedback and to encourage revision.

The object of the course is to develop students' critical abilities.

The first meeting of the course will be on January 31st at 11:00 AM in MP012.
