Multiphonic Portamento

Etude 5 - Multiphonic Portamento Sequences is comprised of ascending passages. It is modeled after passages found in Akira Nishimura's Aquatic Aura (1996) and Masataka Matsuo's Distraction (1988). Each phrase ends with a single pitch portamento.

One should first practice this Etude without the portamenti between multiphonics. The gradual finger movement and embouchure change can be worked on in the following manner – focus first on the top line, then on the bottom line, and finally on the two lines together. Isolate the most difficult legato/portamento connections – after they are mastered, chain them together with other portamenti in the phrase:
