Background

Xming is a popular X Server for Windows which allows you to receive and draw graphical applications run from another Linux computer.

These notes detail the installation of both Xming 6.9.0.31 and the Xming 7.3.0.15 Fonts packages.

Xming Installation

Welcome to the Xming Setup Wizard

The first screen upon launching the Xming installer, click Next

Select Destination location

Default location is fine, click Next

Select Components

Defaults are fine, click Next

Select Start Menu Folder

Default folder is fine, click Next

Select Additional Tasks

Add to quick launch or Desktop if you desire, click Next

Ready to Install

Review settings, click Install

Completing the Xming Setup Wizard

Uncheck the Launch Xming box, we have more work to do first — click Finish

Xming Fonts Installation

Welcome to the Xming-fonts Setup Wizard

The first screen upon launching the Xming Fonts installer, click Next

Select Destination Location

Default location is fine, click Next

Folder Exists

You can safely ignore this warning, click Yes

Select Components

Defaults are fine, click Next

Select Start Menu Folder

Default folder is fine, click Next

Ready to Install

Review settings, click Install

Completing the Xming-fonts Setup Wizard

To finish the setup click Finish

Running Xming

Start \ Programs \ Xming \ Xming

You're looking to launch Xming (there are a couple of other utilities that come with it)

Windows Security Alert

The first time you run Xming, you may need to tell Windows to unblock Xming — click Unblock

Xming in the System Tray

At this point you should notice an “X” in the system tray

PuTTy SSH X11 Forwarding

Now, in PuTTy we need to enable X11 forwarding, under X11

Check the Enable X11 forwarding checkbox

Under the host name, enter linux.gl.umbc.edu, click Open

GL Login Prompt

Enter your myUMBC username

GL Password Prompt

Enter your myUMBC password

Tunneling XEmacs using PuTTy

At this point you can tunnel back X applications, such as XEmacs
