SYNOPSIS
This story begins with the two commanding generals
under King Duncan of Scotland, Macbeth and Banquo,
who are returning from a victory over a rebel army.
The generals are accosted by a group of witches who
promise that Macbeth will one day be Thane of
Cawdor and King of Scotland, and that Banquo's
sons shall sit upon the throne. When the witches'
first prophecy about Macbeth is fulfilled, Shakespeare's drama turns to
tragedy as Macbeth, aided by his wife, seizes the throne by bloodshed,
and protects it by the murder of Banquo. Shakespeare examines the
deadly ambition of Macbeth and his lady as their ruthless maneuvers
trap them in the twists of their own fatal game.

THE PROJECT Four years ago, the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) launched SHAKESPEARE ON WHEELS. Based on a project created by Theatre Department Chairman William T. Brown in Africa during 1964, this innovative summer program mounts a portable Elizabethan-style stage on top of a 40 foot flatbed trailer. In the spirit of Europe's pageant wagons, the theatre and its players travel throughout Maryland and its neighboring states, bringing the joys of Shakespeare to the people. This summer, SHAKESPEARE ON WHEELS marks its fifth season with an innovative production of Macbeth. From July to September, the company will perform Shakespeare's famous tragedy of power, corruption, and the supernatural at 20 sites in Maryland, southern Pennsylvania, northern Virginia, and Washington D.C. During 37 free performances, they will entertain audiences of every age and back- ground in an atmosphere reminiscent of Shakespeare's own time. THE SCHOOL From its contemporary campus just minutes from Baltimore and convenient to Washington, D. C. and Annapolis, UMBC maintains the traditions and values of a liberal arts institution while advancing knowledge across a variety of disciplines. Its 28 undergraduate degree programs range from the sciences and engineering to the arts and humanities. Its graduate school, conducted with the University of Mary- land at Baltimore, offers 87 degree programs. The Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery ranks among the nation's leading university libraries in automation-enhanced information systems. The Theatre Department at UMBC offers majors in acting, technical theatre, and educational theatre. Productions are presented during the regular academic year (September-May), as well as during the summer months via SHAKESPEARE ON WHEELS. Over the past 16 years, eight UMBC productions have been selected for presentation in the regional competition of the American College Theatre Festival. Four of these have advanced to the prestigious National Festival at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, in Washington, D. C. The most recent productions were Sam McCready's adaptation and direction of The Importance of Being Oscar and Spring's Awakening. UMBC also serves as home for The Maryland Stage Company, a semi-professional company directed by Associate Professor Xerxes Mehta. UMBC THEATRE FACULTY Associate Professors: William T.
