Uncultivated (2008 - ongoing), pigment ink jet prints

Uncultivated is an ongoing series of photographs documenting spontaneously growing plant life in urban environments. The images shown here were taken in Baltimore, Maryland and Detroit, Michigan, two cities rife with economic problems and as a result populated with abandoned buildings and large patches of open space. Over time, such areas become perfect environments for certain persistent (often invasive) species of plants commonly referred to as weeds, a word used to designate any plant as ‘unwanted’. Weeds are part of the unconscious of the urban landscape, reflecting unintended consequences of conscious human activity. However, from a weed’s point of view, the urban landscape offers unique opportunities in which to thrive.
