Discussion Topic: Resumes
Today in class, Mrs. Harris lectured about resumes. See talked about each of the different parts/types
of resumes.
Three Different Types of Resumes:
-traditional resume
-scanned resume
-web resume
* You have the option of which type of resume you what to create
Three Different Parts to a Resume include:
-Cover letter: The job of the cover letter is to persuade your audience to move you onto the next step of the job search process
-The Resume of Choice: The job of a resume is to inform your perspective employer(s) of your personal data,
education, work experience, and references (almost optional)
-The Follow-Up Letter: Companies use them as invisible obstacle to narrow applicant pool
There are Five Different Types of Follow-Up Letters:
1. No Fault Follow-Up Letter: No response to initial mailing
“No fault” approach:
ex. Because something might have happened to my original letter, I am enclosing another copy of my letter and résumé.
2 paragraphs long
Final paragraph asks for notice of decision, positive or negative as well as contact information
Don’t forget the courteous closing sentence.
2. Thank You Letter:
- you thank the company for interviewing you
- you say something flattering about the company
- remind the audience of your strengths
- close with contact information
3.Acceptance Letter:
-Job acceptance = direct approach
-Say yes and thank you
-Schedule interview, meeting, medical exam, etc.– respond to any specifics mentioned with job offer
-Close with enthusiastic comment about working for company and courteous closing
4.Refusal Letter:
-Job refusal = indirect approach
-Say thank you for job offer and something flattering about company
-Refuse job and give reason
-Close with hope that might apply again to company in future
5.Stall Letter:
-More time needed to decide
-Thank you for job offer
-Ask for more time with the reason
-Assure audience that you will decide immediately if you can’t get the extension and repeat contact information
** You must choose from one of these follow-up letters to write and include with your resume and job ad
