Burma is a land of immense economic potential, rich in natural resources and with an educational tradition still strong despite years of governmental neglect. During British colonial rule from the 1820s to 1948, some infrastructure was built to tap Burma’s vast agricultural and mineral wealth, and the country became one of the world’s leading rice exporters.

Prior to 1962, there were about 15 private travel agencies and 6 hotels which were nationalized in 1964. Subsequently, Trade Corporation No.(20) Hotel and Tourism Corporation) was formed on December20, 1965 with Inya Lake, Strand Hotel, Taunggyi Hotel, Ngapali Hotel anf Tourist Burma under its managemant.
It was reorganized in Hotel and Tourist Corporation ( HTC ) on July 27, 1976.

The time was just a little after 9 in the morning when our group arrived at Myanmar Gems Emporium Hall. Soon as we entered the magnificent building, the first thing we saw was the huge Mid- year Myanmar Gem, Jade and Pearl Emporium signboard . It was so cool and pleasant in the fully air conditioned hall. Passing the security gate one could see beautiful Myanmar traditional paintings on the wall and a brand new stairway, where a beautiful girl awaits with a sweet smile.
