Designing for the Elderly
Sara J. Czaja
The intent of this chapter is to discuss the importance of considering
older adults in the design of technical systems. Potential use of
technology in the area of work, education, information retrieval,
communication, and health care by older people will be
discussed. Current data on the actual use of technology by this
population will be reviewed. Data regarding user preferences and
attitudes towards technology will also be presented. In addition,
findings regarding the ability of older people to use technology will
be summarized. Finally, the efficacy of design solutions and areas of
needed research in the area of aging and technology will be
highlighted.
