I’m an assistant professor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. My main research interests are the social impacts of technology, gender, research methods, inequality and new media. I’m also interested in applying complex systems methods to sociological problems. You can find information about my research and some of my papers here.

If you have a question or would like a copy of a paper that is not yet posted here, drop me a line at zeynep at umbc.edu.

Some Recent Happenings:

August 18-23, 2008. I participated in the “International Workshop on Challenges and Visions in the Social Sciences workshop” held at ETH at Zurich, Switzerland. Program here.

August 1-4th, 2008. I presented two papers at the annual conference of the American Sociological Association. Drop me a line if you’d like a —draft— copy of the “Gender, Social Capital And Social Network(ing) Sites: Women Bonding, Men Searching” paper. (I found  that online social network(ing) site use has different consequences for men and women in terms of social capital. This seems primarily to be due to gender differences in modalities of sociality as carried out on these sites).

May, 28th, 2008: I gave talk at Johns Hopkins. Details here and copy of my slides here.

Upcoming:

September 22nd. I will be the annual guest lecturer at the Sociology Department at the College of William and Mary. Talk title TBA.
